The crop growth planning problem in vertical farming

چکیده

In this paper, we study the problem of planning growth crops on shelves in vertical farming cabinets under controlled conditions. By adjusting temperature, humidity, light, and other environmental conditions different parts cabinets, a planner must ensure that crop is able to satisfy some deterministic demand. We prove be NP-hard propose an integer programming formulation capture real-life operational characteristics, including changes daily, shelf-by-shelf basis, over horizon months. compare four objective functions from which can choose, depending specific operations company. A computational realistic instances, make available as public dataset, shows choice function heavily influences both difficulty solving model with standard solver solution characteristics.

a substantial global increase in the demand for food of animal origin, while also aggravating the competition between crops and livestock (increasing cropping areas and reducing rangelands). The livestock revolution 1 is stretching the capacity of existing production, but it is also exacerbating environmental problems. Therefore, while it is necessary to satisfy consumer demand, improve nutriti...

Improved Program Planning Generates Large Benefits in High Risk Crop Farming

Agricultural production relies to a great extent on biological processes in natural environments. In addition to volatile prices, it is thus heavily exposed to risks caused by the variability of natural conditions such as rainfall, temperature and pests. With a view to the apparently lacking support of risky farm production program decisions through formal planning models, the objective of this...

Automated Pollinator Monitoring for Crop Farming

Pollinating bee species face an increased risk of extinction worldwide. The annual value of this pollination service in the U.S. is calculated at US $ 15 billion and the estimate worldwide is US $ 65 – 70 billion. But, endeavors on pollinator monitoring and management must build on reliable surveillance and monitoring of pollinator species. This contribution presents the ABIS toolset for specie...

Nitrogen Farming: Harvesting a Different Crop

The streams of North America convey excessive amounts of nitrate-nitrogen, the effects of which range from eutrophication of local surface waters to hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico. The vast majority of the nitrate load can be attributed to agricultural sources. The diffuse nature of these sources defies the more traditional treatment strategies. The concrete and steel structures of point-source ...
